AAA 2016 Memorial Day Travel Forecast: 34 million Americans to hit the road this weekend

AAA released its 2016 Memorial Day Travel Forecast, estimating 38 million Americans will travel to (hopefully) sunnier, warmer destinations this holiday weekend. Of those 38 million, AAA estimates that 89 percent (or roughly 34 million) will be traveling via car more than 50 miles from home. That amounts to nearly 10 percent of the entire U.S. population being on the road between Thursday and Monday.

The group attributes the increase in travel to record low gas prices, which across the nation currently average just $2.26 per gallon. Top travel destinations include New York City; Washington, D.C.; Boston; Los Angeles; San Francisco; South Padre Island; Myrtle Beach; Orlando; Miami; and Honolulu.
