Next-Gen Ford Escape gets next-gen sustainability

Announced via its company Facebook page this morning, Ford Motor Company revealed that its next-generation Escape will be greener than ever, utilizing 25 recycled 20-ounce plastic bottles in each petite ute’s carpeting.

The car maker had already selected to shun petroleum in 2008, choosing to integrate soy in its seats. This is just another step for the automaker, who held a luncheon in D.C. this July to discuss its sustainable offerings, toward leading the way to America’s green car economy.

In an exclusive article at, Ford divulged how it will take some of the largest trash-cloggers and put them to good use. Given a normal sales and production year, that would mean that more than four million plastic bottles could be rescued from cluttering up our landfills and instead weaved into the new Escape SUV’s carpeting, which is slated to be revealed at the upcoming Los Angeles Auto Show.

What’s unique about what Ford is doing here is that the sustainable technologies the company’s implementing are not just for cars already deemed to be “green” – such as its line of hybrid options. These are options Ford has chosen for multiple makes and models they produce. The headline didn’t read “Ford Uses Recycled Plastic Bottles in its New Hybrid Escape.” 

Ford is harnessing a real opportunity to ease the typical American consumer into a new way of thinking about green vehicles. The Detroit-based company is smartly reshaping how its customers view sustainability…and it’s doing so without the help of a household name like “Prius.”
